Why Does Silicone Crack On Gloves In Screen Printing?

In glove screen printing, silicone cracking is a common issue that often appears after stretching or repeated use. At first, the print may look perfectly fine, but later small cracks start to appear on the surface.


Why does a flexible-looking silicone layer crack on gloves that are designed to stretch?

In most cases, the problem is not caused by a single mistake. It is usually the result of how the silicone behaves after curing, and how it reacts when the glove is in real use.

1. The Silicone Is Not Flexible Enough for the Fabric

Gloves are highly stretchable materials. When your hand moves, the fabric expands in multiple directions.

If the silicone layer is:

too hard

too thick

or not designed for textile stretching

Then it cannot move together with the fabric.

As a result, the silicone gets pulled until small cracks appear.

2. Too Much or Too Strong Curing

Silicone needs heat to become stable. But curing has a balance:

If curing is not enough → weak structure

If curing is too strong → silicone becomes too stiff

When silicone becomes too stiff, it loses elasticity.

During glove stretching, the rigid layer cannot follow movement → it starts cracking.

3. Fabric Movement Is Stronger Than the Silicone Layer

Different glove materials behave differently:

Knitted gloves stretch heavily

Synthetic fibers recover quickly

Some fabrics move in uneven directions

Even if silicone looks fine, repeated movement creates small stress points.

Over time, these stress points turn into visible cracks.

4. Uneven Printing Thickness

In screen printing, silicone thickness is not always perfectly even.

Some areas may be:

thicker

while others are thinner

Thicker areas are less flexible, while thinner areas move more.

This imbalance creates stress between different zones → cracking starts from weak points.

5. Heat Distribution During Drying

In real production, heat is not always perfectly even inside the oven.

Some areas may:

cure faster

while others cure slower

This creates small differences in hardness across the print.

When the glove is stretched, these uneven areas react differently → cracks appear.

Silicone cracking on gloves is mainly caused by a mismatch between:

fabric movement

and curing conditions

It is not just a printing defect, but a combination of material behavior and production control.
