Puff Effect Silicone Printing for Sportswear and Activewear

Sportswear and activewear frequently use silicone printing for logos, numbers, lettering and graphic details. Puff effect silicone can add three-dimensional depth when the design needs a more visible raised structure.

Because performance garments may stretch, bend and move repeatedly, the complete puff print should be evaluated on the actual textile and garment construction.

For the available puff silicone systems, see Puff Effect Silicone Ink For Textile Screen Printing.

Typical Sportswear Applications

Puff silicone can be evaluated for:

• Chest logos

• Sleeve graphics

• Brand names

• Numbers and lettering

• Decorative stripes

• Geometric graphics

• Raised badges

• Selected 3D details

Suitable products may include sports shirts, training garments, fitness clothing and other compatible textile constructions.

Colored 3D Puff Logos

Color and height can be combined in the same design.

  A typical structure can be:

Sportswear Fabric → Colored Puff Silicone → Dry / Stabilize → Additional Puff Layer if Required → Final Cure

Available pigment references include white, black, red, yellow and blue.

Surface Contrast on Sports Fabrics

A puff logo can create visual and tactile contrast against smooth, knitted or textured sports fabrics. The same artwork may look different depending on the underlying textile surface and color.

Evaluate the effect on dark fabric, light fabric, smooth knit and elastic fabric where these constructions are part of the intended product range.

Movement and Flexibility

Sportswear may repeatedly stretch and recover during use. Large printed areas and high puff structures can behave differently from small logos.

Check the printed area, total silicone thickness, fabric movement, edge integrity, adhesion and hand feel after movement.

Control Printing Thickness

A higher build is not automatically a better result. One or two puff layers can be evaluated first, and additional layers can be introduced where the artwork requires stronger dimensional height.

For pass-count guidance, see How Many Printing Layers Are Needed for Puff Effect Silicone Ink?.

Select the Production System

XG-866ARP and XG-866CRT are the listed heat-curing main silicones. XG-20ARP is the listed self-drying option.

For direct system selection, read Heat-Curing vs Self-Drying Puff Silicone Ink for Textile Screen Printing.

Consider Dye Migration on Synthetic Sportswear

Where dye migration or sublimation is a concern, XG-866F can be evaluated in the heat-curing system and XG-20D in the self-drying system.

The anti-sublimation layer and puff layer should be tested as one complete print structure on the actual dyed fabric.

For multi-effect structures, see How to Combine Puff Effect Silicone with Anti-Sublimation, Conductive and Other Silicone Effects.

Before mass production, test the actual sportswear fabric, artwork, puff height, color and complete drying or curing process.
