How to Apply Clear Matte Silicone Over Colored Silicone Printing

Colored silicone printing is widely used for garment logos, lettering, decorative graphics and three-dimensional textile designs.

After the color has been completed, the final surface can remain glossy or receive an additional matte finish.

Where a softer and lower-glare appearance is required, clear matte silicone top coat can be screen printed directly over the colored silicone as the final surface layer.

For available matte silicone models, catalysts and curing systems, see Clear Matte Silicone Top Coat For Textile Screen Printing.

Basic Printing Structure

A typical colored matte silicone structure may be:

Fabric → Base Silicone → Colored Silicone → Clear Matte Silicone Top Coat → Final Cure

  For high-density designs:

Fabric → Base Silicone → High Density Silicone → Colored Silicone → Clear Matte Silicone Top Coat → Final Cure

The matte top coat is transparent and is intended to modify the surface appearance rather than replace the color underneath.

Suitable Colored Designs

Clear matte silicone can be evaluated over:

  • White silicone logos
  • Black silicone lettering
  • Red patterns
  • Blue graphics
  • Multicolor logos
  • Color-block designs
  • Colored high-density patterns
  • Raised three-dimensional graphics
  • Tone-on-tone silicone printing

For garment-specific examples, see Clear Matte Silicone Printing for Garment Logos, Patterns and Textile Graphics.

Preserve The Underlying Color

The purpose of the clear matte layer is to change the surface reflection while allowing the underlying color to remain visible.

  Examples include:

Red silicone → Clear matte silicone → Matte red surface

Black raised logo → Clear matte silicone → Matte black raised logo

Multicolor graphic → Clear matte silicone → Multicolor matte graphic

The underlying design remains the main visual color source.

Flash Dry The Colored Layer Before Matte Printing

Before applying the matte silicone, the underlying colored silicone should be sufficiently stabilized.

If the color layer remains too wet, the final matte printing may become difficult to control.

  A general sequence is:

Print color → Flash dry → Print matte silicone → Flash dry if another matte pass is required → Final cure

The exact drying condition should be confirmed according to the selected silicone system.

Two Or More Matte Passes

A standard matte surface can often be developed with approximately two printing passes.

Additional passes may be evaluated where:

  • The pattern is deeply raised
  • Surface coverage is incomplete
  • The printed structure is complicated
  • A different hand feel is required

Do not increase coating thickness without evaluating flexibility and surface definition.

Why The Original Print May Still Look Too Glossy

If the final surface remains more reflective than required, check the matte-layer coverage, screen setup and pattern structure rather than assuming the colored silicone itself is the only cause.

For a broader troubleshooting explanation, read Why Does Silicone Printing Look Too Glossy? How to Create a Matte Finish.

Multicolor Patterns Require Good Registration

When a design contains several colors, make sure the underlying silicone structure is completed correctly before applying the matte surface.

  Check:

  • Color registration
  • Edge definition
  • Surface height
  • Flash drying
  • Matte coverage
  • Final curing

The matte layer should finish the completed design rather than compensate for poor color registration underneath.

Applications

Colored matte silicone effects can be used on:

  • T-shirts and hoodies
  • Sportswear
  • Pants and leggings
  • Underwear and yoga wear
  • Socks and gloves
  • Webbing and elastic bands
  • Textile labels
  • Fashion accessories

For highly elastic garments, see Matte Silicone Printing for Pants, Leggings, Underwear and Stretch Garments. For socks, gloves and webbing, see Matte Silicone Printing for Socks, Gloves, Webbing and Textile Accessories.

Select The Correct Curing System

The colored silicone structure and the matte top layer must be compatible with the selected curing workflow.

For heat-curing and self-drying system selection, see Heat-Cure vs Self-Drying Matte Silicone for Textile Screen Printing.

Test Before Bulk Production

Test the actual substrate and complete printing structure before bulk production.

Evaluate color appearance, matte uniformity, interlayer adhesion, stretch or bending, washing, abrasion and final curing under the actual production conditions.
